Kate Phillips as Eliza Scarlet

Eliza Scarlet is a young 26 year old woman living in London in 1882.  Following the death of her mother, Lavinia Scarlet, when Eliza was young, she grew up with just her father, Detective Inspector Henry Scarlet.  Together, they bonded over his teachings of his detective skills.  However, her dream of becoming a police officer is not a reality for a lady in Victorian England, and leaves her paying street boys for tip offs to enable her to practice her skills.

After the death of her father, she is left with little money to pay her household bills, and she has to choose between getting married or taking over her late father’s private detective business.  With a little help from a friend, she chooses the latter, but it won’t be an easy one because being a detective is no job for a lady.  But Eliza Scarlet isn’t any ordinary lady, and she’s determined to make the most of her unexpected situation, with her wit, sharp mind, and a little bit of luck on her side.

Whilst her new business venture gets off to a rocky start with the slim pickings of cases, she soon gathers an eclectic mix of friends to help her, as she takes on the case of an innocent murderer, infiltrates the suffragettes, works with a death photographer, and helps foil the largest forgery operation Scotland Yard has ever seen.
